After I change the resolution via the control panel, the computer will reset back to the lowest resolution after a few minutes. How do I get it to open and stay at a reasonable resolutions?

So when you start Firefox it changes to a low resolution?

If the case then you may have selected something in the desktop shortcut like say the "Run in 60 x480 screen resolution" in Compatibility tab.
