What operating system do you have?

If you are using Windows, press Ctrl Alt Delete holding all at the same time. This will give you an option to start the task manager. Once the task manager is running, simply find firefox on that list, select it, and click "End Task". If you are using mac OSX, open the apple menu on the upper left. Click "Force Quit". This will lead you to a window that shows all the applications that are running. From there, select Firefox and click "Force Quit"

Have a great day!!

Do you have the Firefox icon on your quick launch? Right click on it, and select Open New Window. Sometimes this works. If it opens, close it by Menu > File > Exit.

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up in Windows. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997866 {web link}
