New emails in my inbox are repeatedly marked as read before I've opened them. I know I can mark them as unread but am worried that I'm missing important emails thinking unread info has already been seen. It seems to happen somewhat randomly. Some days, all unread msgs are properly marked when I open Thunderbird, other days everything is marked as read when there are 10 or 15 new messages I have not yet seen.

My first thought is: Do you have a phone that you can read those messages on? And do you mark them as read there? My second thought is: Do you have any filters running that might do this?

Thank you Gnospen but I don't check them on my phone & I never set up any filters. Today, when I opened Thunderbird, all the messages were marked as 'read'.

What kind of account do you have? IMAP or POP3? You can check this under Toolbar button (☰) -> Options -> Account Settings -> Server settings.

any filter on the server side of things. Gmail filters I know reset the message to read in some circumstances.

Found in advance preferences that a box was marked to automatically mark messages as read. Not sure why this would even be a necessary option, much less why it would be the default setting. Unchecked said box &, for a while, all new messages were marked as unread...even after I read them. By today, Thunderbird started marking ALL messages as read again. Grrr.

No I'm puzzled, I cant find that box in advanced pref's on TB Check your account that mail isn't marked read from the server side before download.
