My Inbox automatically marks messages as read and deletes them on its own. Can't find them after deleted. How do I stop this?

All incoming messages appear as read when they first appear. If I have email in the Inbox and I exit and come back to the email inbox it is often empty without me doing anything with them. I look in all of my folders but the emails that were in my Inbox are gone and not distributed to any other folder.

We are getting more and more such issies. Almost always from folk that get their mail on a phone or tablet and do not understand that the mail from the phone is synchronized to Thunderbird so read and delete there becomes the same in Thunderbird.
