Trying to revert to "sender" and "recipient" instead of the new "correspondents" and Thunderbird says,

In version 45.0, existing folders will be upgraded to the new column, unless this upgrade is switched off in the "config editor" by setting the mailnews.ui.upgrade.correspondents preference to false. Starting in version 45.1, there won't be any automated upgrade, so users who wish to use the "Correspondents" column by default need to set the mail.threadpane.use_correspondents preference to true.

So I go to the config editor to do that, but mailnews.ui.upgrade.correspondents is not listed in the editor. Now what?

OK I will see if somthing is changing the session settings. Thanks. However I don't know why you could access the line mailnews.ui.upgrade.correspondents to set it, and I cannot find that line in the editor.

It is a column just like any other column. Go to the icon at the right end of the header bar and turn on or off any column you want.

Does not solve my problem. I have been temporarily doing what you say, taking three clicks (add recipient, add sender, remove correspondent) but I want to solve it permanantly and for all email messages. The temp fix is not good enough, and I am trying to follow the direction given for how to solve it permanently, but the directions are wrong since the indicated entry in the editor is just not there.

No idea why this is a temp switch for you. Thunderbird open just like you close it. The exception is if you are running some clean up software that messes with the session.json file. CCLEANER is an example. Are you running version 45.1? That changed forcing Correspondents on you. It will not change the columns back but it is no longer the default. FYI I changed that setting in config editor that you cannot find and it did not change the columns back. I still had to do it manually.

I used the search field. See image.

So I have learned from you to use "search" rather than expecting the editor listing to be alphabetic. I looked for the line alphabetically and it is not there; see the image. But you found it quickly with "search." This is a valuable lesson, thanks.
