I have a Mac, running 10.6.8. Do I need to uninstall Firefox 48.0 to install Firefox 45 ESR (Extended Support Release)?

I just learned that Firefox is ending support for my operating system, Mac 10.6.8. In September, do I need to uninstall Firefox 48 before I install Firefox 45 ESR version? Thanks for any advice.

Hi please have a read at the following Blog post about this update Blog About OSX

That blog post is a little misleading with some words.

Firefox 48.0 was only just released on Aug 2nd and works on OSX 10.6.8.

See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-osx

The future Firefox 49.0 and newer Releases will require OSX 10.9 or newer. There is a option of using the Firefox 45 ESR branch to get security updates for a while still as 45.8.0esr will be out when Firefox 53.0 is released and 45.8.0esr will be the last unless Mozilla extends 45.0 esr support.

You can stay with Firefox 48.0 for now or can change to the 45.0 ESR channel now if you like. https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/

The major version the ESR will be based on will be Firefox 52.0 and when the then older 45 ESR branch is made end of life there will be no more support for OSX 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 then.

This was not a sudden change as it was planned for a while now.

I'm in the same boat as ray8416 and I have additional questions:

  • When I make the switch from 48 to 45 ESR, should I uninstall 48 first (by dragging it from the applications folder to the trash)? EDIT: Oops, I see ray8416 already asked this question. I'm leaving it here, though, because James didn't answer it in his reply.
  • Will my plugins and extensions automatically be transferred to 45 ESR? (I have only one extension, Adblock Plus. I'd hate to lose the list of websites and webpages that I have it disabled on.)

Come September, can I install Firefox 45 ESR OVER Firefox 48.0? Or, do I need to uninstall 48.0 BEFORE installing 45 ESR? If I can install 45 ESR over 48 --- what will happen to my bookmarks, add-ons and extensions? Thanks again for any response!
