I have loved using thunderbird, but I need to have it check my outlook account. I am using the 2 step verification process. That seems to be the problem. Hoping this will also allow me to use my contacts in outlook.

Have you created an application password for Thunderbird on outlook.com?

I am unsure as to how to do this. Checked the help section of outlook.com without much success. Dr. Y

until you figure it out I suggest you disable the two step authentication. Then you will have no trouble with Thunderbird at all.
