my thunderbird is not connecting to my googlemmil account even though it works properly on the apple mail app and on email web page. i can confirm that it works properly on another googlemail account and i have checked that the server settings are the same except for the user name and password.

Hi Christ 1 It said login to servers map.googlemail.com failed enter new password, I put in my google mail password and it returns with the same window, I had changed my password but it still says the same. An Apple technician tried all checks and then helped me post my question hoping someone may have solved the same issue. Any ideas I am not very good with computers so if you have any help please give it to me in small steps. Mary

Hi Christ 1 I can’t post the answer as when I click copy text to clipboard it doesn’t do anything to allow me to paste.

Place the cursor where you want to paste. Ctrl+v is a standard paste method. Right-click with the mouse usually gives paste options too.

The gmail server address is imap.googlemail.com, not map.googlemail.com as you showed above. Was this just a typing error?

It was a typing error. No response with a rt click. Ctrl+v doesn’t do anything in that box, the box doesn’t open to alllow a paste.

Which one is "that box"? The one you need to paste into is the reply box on this forum.

Ah! I have just noticed that mention of "Apple technician". You need to learn how to copy and paste on your OS. Ctrl+v and right-click are how we PC users do it, in Windows and Linux.

It seems you mac users have "option" and "command" keys.

The box I was referring to is when I tried to follow the above, i was trying to follow this on my Mac, I can only get email and am replying to you on iPad. I have not used this service before so not sure how it worked.

Those instructions are specific to Thunderbird, and I believe Thunderbird is not available on the iPad. But I take it that you have Thunderbird on a Mac computer?

Has this account ever worked before? Has it just stopped working? Is it POP or IMAP? If IMAP, I'd just remove the broken account and set it up again. Your messages are stored on the server and will reappear when you manage to get it to connect.

If you can't find a way to share the information asked for, it's very hard to help you further, because we can't see what might be wrong. Setting up the account again gives Thunderbird a clean start, and it's generally quite good with automatic configuration of Gmail accounts. I would recommend that you choose OAuth2 when that choice is offered.

Thankyou for your suggestion, this account has always worked until i changed to High sierra now it wont work on my mac but does on my ipad. It is imap. i am afraid to remove the account on my mac in case i loose my email on my ipad as well, i do want to keep all my emails. Do you mean for me to remove my google account, i am confused, is it thunderbird or googlemail i remove.

First I'd double check if the offending account uses IMAP. If so, I'd remove it from Thunderbird. Then re-install it.

Another, perhaps more cautious approach is to change the name of the existing account, then install it again, alongside the pre-existing account. That way you have zero risk of losing sight of anything in the old instance of the account.

The reason for changing the old account's name is that Thunderbird won't allow two accounts with the same name. But since it doesn't actually ask you to set a name for an account, but synthesises a name from the email address, a second instance of an account will inevitably get the same name as the first. So, we can change the first account's name and then when we add the second instance, it can't clash with the old.

My Thunderbird has suddenly stopped talking to my router. It was OK yesterday and Firefox is running perfectly. As Thunderbird will not open I cannot get to the Settings etc. The only thing I can think of is that yesterday we tried to install VMWareplayer. It didn't work so it was removed. Any ideas, please?
