Also all history is also gone.

I tried restoring bookmarks from the automatic Firefox backups but Firefox says it cannot handle the safety copy. Then I tried to convert one backup to html, it looks OK in Firefox, but restoring bookmarks from the html file does not work either. Any ideas what to do nest - has it really to be this difficult??

Sorry to hear that. Just in case a file is locked, it might help to shut down Windows and start it up again.

Have you seen the error mentioned in this article: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message. The steps suggested there might be necessary if bookmarking is broken.
