You can check some browser.link.open prefs on the about:config page.

For links opened via JavaScript you can look at this pref:

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Note that internal about pages like about:addons and about:preferences will still open in a new tab.
