Clicking on the gmail inbox brings up pop up screen "One account. All of Google" sign in with your google account.. After this screen pops up I log in to my gmail account and Thunderbird asks to access and manage the messages. After I give permission another small screen pops up saying "Authentication failure while connecting to server imap.gmail.com." Separately, I can log in to my gmail account through webmail, no problem. Thunderbird 68.2.0

Thank you sfhowes on the heads-up about the new TB release 68.2.1 hot off the press. That appears to fix it.
