Thunderbird adds 5 + MB to outgoing email containing a video.
Why, when I send a 15.9 MB video, is the resulting email 21.7 MB?

That's the standard encoding overhead that results in a message being about 30% larger than the attachment , and is the same for all mail clients. You can avoid it by uploading to a file hosting service and sending a download link by email.
