Since 3.6.4 (or there about) Firefox no longer shows the web address of the site or page you are trying to access in the address bar. It now always says "checking history and bookmarks" instead.

How do I get the latest version of Firefox but eliminate this unwanted feature?

You can check the location bar setting:

Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

You can also try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the Safe mode start window.
