How do I view symbols instead of just seeing a box?

Often times if I need a translation or just want to make sure that I've done a symbol right, it comes up with a box or a box with numbers or letters (sometimes both) instead. Is there any way I can see the symbols themselves instead of the boxes? If so, how?

If you see a box with hex code in it then that means that Firefox can't map a character to a specific font and you have to install a font that covers the affected characters.
