As a workaround try this

  1. copy the address from the firefox location bar. (Ctr+ L, Ctrl+C)
  2. Put the mouse cursor on the Windows desktop ( Alt+spacebar, N)
  3. Right click (or options key)
  4. New -> Shortcut -> paste link from location bar into the dialogue window

You can drag the favicon on the left end of the location bar onto the desktop to create a shortcut.

You can also use an extension.
