I am currently using the latest 4.0 beta. I have configured the browser so I can use the location bar for google searches. Queries with multiple words are immediately searched, but queries with only one word always produce a lag before being searched.

It is better to use a keyword search if you use the location bar to search to prevent problems with one word queries because Firefox will first try to resolve that word as a valid website URL and perform a few DNS lookups.
