I downloaded 4.0 and installed it on os x 10.5.8 ppc. 4.0 apparently doesn't run on a ppc. Are you hanging me out to dry and forcing me to use Safari instead or is there some way to restore the earlier version - 3.6.*. It appears you will only support intel machines.

Due to the age of the PowerPC platform and some limitations it would have caused, Mozilla did deprecate official support for it starting with Firefox 4. There are however a few community members that have made the additions and modifications to run Firefox 4 on PPC: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
