After upgrading to Firefox 4, when I started it from a URL shortcut on the desktop an error message appears stating the URL can't be found but Firefox still starts and displays the URL requested but the error message remains until its OK button has been clicked. It has become so irritating that I have downgraded to Firefox 3.

Did you check the target line in the desktop shortcut to see if there is anything appended after the path of Firefox?

You can also check the Home page setting:

Yes, and it's perfectly OK. All the shortcuts work perfectly with IE and Firefox 3.x. The error message appears on startup form any icon. This is a Firefox 4 issue only
