was surfing instructables.com, when firefox was taken over by program that warned i had virus & malware. i could not exit firefox & had to force quit. looked at history & site is www.scanagainantivirusengine.com. how do i know if my computer is infected?

I was surfing www.instructables.com on building a bicycle repair stand when firefox was diverted. a dialogue box appeared saying my computer had been infected with viruses and malware. it started scanning my computer. I had to force quit firefox to stop. i looked at history and here is the site that is logged www .scanagainantivirusengine .com. i do not know if this a known issue and i do not know if my computer is infected with a virus or malware. can you help me and others to prevents this from taking place. regards. steve

That type of site is trying to get people to install malware, they are typically aimed at Windows users. The alerts are typically bogus and it will appear to scan your computer and show some infections. Those scans will look like a Windows scan even though you are on a Mac.

To ensure you are clean try running a full scan with your anti-virus program.
