The red cross on start page top right is missing in firefox 3.6

in mozilla fire fox start page the red cross or cancel button is not shown on my laptop in firefox 3.6 also have upgraded to firefox 4 & firefox button at top left of screen is missing also bookmarks icon at top right of screen is also missing. 

                            because of these problems went back to installing 3.6 but as above no cancel cross on top right of screen
