After upgrading my computer i downloaded the latest version of Firefox. Previous versions had a quick dial feature - i.e. on one page i could save bookmarks for a number of sites and a quick click on the dial took me to the site. On the latest version of Firefox i cant seem to find this feature.

That has never been a built-in feature of Firefox. Check you list of add-ons to see if an add-on has this feature, also check for any disabled add-ons.
