Firefox 4 requests the master keyword when I'm not doing anything, is it perhaps Firefox sync that tries to synchronize?

Firefox asks for the master password when it is idle or at least I'm not entering a password protected site. It's very worrying... I suspect that it may be due to Firefox Sync. Does Firefox Sync need a password? How can I know what is the master password being requested for?

Having random unsolicited requests for the Master Password is clearly a security weakness of Firefox Sync, you could be responding to an attempted attack.

What were they thinking?

I have disabled Firefox Sync because of this security compromise.

go to Help Menu -> select "Restart with Add-ons Disabled"

Firefox will close then it will open up with just basic Firefox. You can enable the Add-ons later. Check and tell if its working.
