FWIW: I've had luck by going to the addon site (click "more" when you find the addon you want in the addon screen, then go to the homepage) and downloading directly from there rather than via the browser addon module.

Others say adding the string: xpinstall.enabled (with value set to TRUE) in the about:config screen helps (seems to work SOME of the time!)
