Since going to v13, I have been getting the pop up error saying that the plugin container has been shutdown with a data exception error.

It doesn't give an indication as to what plugin it was trying to execute or service. I can't be doing the window blind imitation. So I deleted v13 and installed an earlier version.

Is there a way to find out what plugin / extension is causing this?

One of the most commonly used plugins is the Flash player; far more common than Java or other types of media. Can you post your plugin version number? Usually you can find it here under "Shockwave Flash":

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Plugins

As a test, you can block Firefox from isolating plugins in the plugin-container.exe process by changing a setting in the about:config preferences editor (dom.ipc.plugins.enabled from true to false). This can cause crashes in the main Firefox process, but if there are far fewer, it might be a worthwhile trade-off until we figure out what's going on with your plugins.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You can try to disable protected mode in the Flash player.

Hi silat, Mozilla and Adobe are working on it. Did you have any comments on new symptoms or fixes? What worked/what didn't work for you? Input is needed because this doesn't affect everyone. Thanks.

I have not had the chance to re-install v13. I have several web sites that I use that are geared to firefox and I can't afford to have the program crater while in the middle of an order. I'll do it this weekend, when I have enough time.

While on 13, I also noticed that I was getting an increasing number of Adobe plugin crash messages - got to a point where it happened 3 times a day. Up to when I uninstalled flash and re-installed.

In short Flash, Java, DWhelper was uninstalled and re-installed with current versions.

I'm using windows vista sp 2.

I have done virus scans (including boot scans) with nothing being reported.

I thought I had saved the troubleshooting information, but I can't find it now on the system.

According to other threads, the shutdown crash is related to the protected mode of the Flash 11.3 plugin. You can disable that using the method described in this article, which cor-el listed above: Adobe Forums: How do I disable Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?.

decided to go ahead and take the plunge. I reloaded v13 after disabling protected mode in flash. Waiting to see what happens. Side question though: with the protected mode disabled what attacks am I open to and what kind of detection/prevention methods are out there?

Good questions. Here's an Adobe blog post with more information: http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html

It didn't take long.
