Most of the time, when I hit a link, it opens, but tabs with ads or pages that I didn't ask for are opening on top of the link I requested, Usually they are for an ad or a survey and they are to some other website. This just started happening after a recent upgrade. I have to dump them to get to the link I originally hit. How can I get rid of them? BTW... I have Firefox for Mac OS

Did you recently install any extensions or see any extensions listed in Tools > Add-ons > Extensions that you didn't install yourself?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

I'm not a Firefox expert. I'm just waiting for help with my own problem. But that unwanted windows and tabs opening sounds more like malware to me, than any problem with the browser. Or it could just be an unreputable site that you're visiting.

Just my 2 cents :-)

I really haven't put anything on here in a long time. I have AdBlock Plus, but have had it for ages. And after I started getting the annoying tabs I got "do not track me" but it didn't seem to help. Something else started happening at the same time as this problem and I don't know if it is related. When I use google maps any more, half the time none of the links work. I bring it up from the bookmarks and it goes to my home map page, but it seems to be frozen. I cannot click on anything or type anything.

Also, I got an answer on another thread from someone called Ice Blue. He said:

You can stop that behavior by changing two settings within the browser. Go to Tools -> Options and click on the CONTENT button. Make sure that "Block pop-up windows" is checked. Then click on the ADVANCED button on the far right and add a check to "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload".

That should stop most of them. If not all, then you could install AdBlock Plus add-on, since most of the redirects are ad generated. (Tools -> Add-ons -> Get Add-ons)

Problem is that when I go to Tools, there is no "Options" under it. None of the buttons listed above are available to me. Maybe because this is a Mac thing?

Man... it's a mess... sorry to bother all of you. I really used to like this browser because AdBlock works so much better than on Safari. But I'm at a loss as to how to fix these problems.

On Mac you can access the Options/Preferences via Firefox > Preferences

Thank you. The "block pop-ups was checked, but the "warn me" was not checked. Will now see how this works. I don't really understand all the other stuff here about "testing" and "safe mode". Sounds really technical. I think what I will do is just save my book marks and dump the browser if none of this works, and try to install it all over. I'm really sad about google maps not working right anymore. *sigh* I don't get it. I have used Firefox for several years with no problems before.

Note that enabling "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page" will cause Firefox display a warning bar and that in some cases you may have to click more than once to proceed to the website in case of multiple redirects.

The setting in "Options > Advanced > General" is meant as an accessibility feature, as you can see by the label of that section, so that people with disabilities or people who use screen readers do not get confused and is not meant as a safety protection to stop redirecting.
