Firefox 29 does not close properly
Since upgrading to Firefox 29, Firefox no longer closes properly. Error message says something like "process is running, close process or restart system". This began immediately after upgrading to Firefox 29. Running Windows 7 Professional (SP1). Firefox 28 worked fine. No changes other than to upgrade Firefox. Cannot keep restarting my system to use this browser. Will have to switch to an alternative if this bug isn't fixed. Have used Firefox from the beginning but this is a deal breaker. Hope you can fix it. No time for workarounds and inspecting plug-ins. The problem clearly lies with this version of Firefox.

hello, unfortunately this is currently a bug in the current firefox version when you have set your history to be cleared at firefox shutdown (under options > privacy) - that is investigated and in the process of getting fixed by mozilla's developers with a high priority.
It's nice to know that someone is working on fixing the bug that prevents firefox 29 from closing properly, but I recall that there was a similar bug several versions ago.
I'm not a programmer so I don't understand the connection between clearing history at shutdown and firefox failing to shut down, but I do know that this bug has occurred in previous versions. It doesn't seem as if firefox 29 went through the appropriate quality control checks before release. A browser that can't reopen unless the user reboots is not ready for primetime.
I have the same problem too.
If you want an alternative try creating batch file. Create txt file and put in this code:
tskill firefox start firefox.exe
and than save it as "firefox.bat"
I like the cmd file approach.
In Windows replace your shortcut to firefox.exe with firefox.cmd.
create the firefox.cmd file with this content:
taskkill /T /F /IM firefox.exe start firefox.exe
From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may be caused by the clear history settings.
Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Then Tools > Options > Privacy. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.
At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997866?esab=a&s=&r=1&as=s {web link}
.bat or .cmd solution very reasonable! Been using something similar for Windows 7 Explorer for going on 2 years now: @echo off
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe explorer.exe
Can always tell when it gets 2 versions open, and won't update directories!
Thanks!
If I limit the history clearing to cache & search, I may as well not bother. The whole purpose, for me, is security. I never leave the browser open when not using, I bet I close it 40 times/day. This had become a pain to remember to "clear history" BEFORE closing firefox! But when I do forget, I don 't use task manager, I use Piriform CCleaner and answer "yes" to force Firefox to close.

Another reason I close Firefox so often, I am using NoScript, and I frequently give websites TEMPORARY permission to call certain scripts. When I'm done, I want the temporary permissions cleared, which is done by closing the Firefox with "clear all history" set.
To me (a security expert) this add-on makes Firefox the stand-out safest browser on the market, BY A MILLION MILES!!! NO ONE is going to execute ANY script on my computer without my permission.
The other really nice thing is, if you have limited bandwidth, you can turn off those pesky, slow click ad sites that frequently crash your efforts! Stop nosey sites from collecting your behavior and dumping cookies on you!
Firefox 30 is out within the next few days and should solve this problem.
- Use New Button -> Help -> About Firefox
to check for updates from tomorrow onwards.
Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for something that can clear the history for you.
