Have some kind of virus or trojan horse -- dozens of spam messages are being sent out from my PC. Is there anything I can do?
The messages do not show up in my Sent folder. Many of them are sent to dead email addresses and the only way I know that this is happening is from the "failure to deliver" messages from the Mail Administrator.

My virus software provider solved the problem -- I am a client to my internet provider for email. The spam messages were coming from there. All I had to do was change my email password and the problem disappeared immediately.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem
I created a new Thunderbird profile and rebooted, but the junk emails keep trying to be sent from my PC. Of course, all I see are the returned emails that can't be sent. There's no telling how many get successfully sent since there's no record in my Sent folder.
Are they actually being sent by you and your PC, or are they backscatter,
