For most sites I visit there is no horizontal scroll bar. When I switch to Internet Explorer, the scroll bar is present. To work with Firefox, I have to widen the window past the boundaries of the parent window and then move it side to side to see all the content. This generally involves typing something in on the left-hand side then moving the window off to the left (hiding the text just typed) to find the buttons that relate to that input. When it appears nothing has happened, I then have to move the window off to the left to see if there are error messages. This has become most annoying. Is there something in the settings that I should know about that will fix this problem? Or should I wait for an update to Firefox? I have a Dell XPS system running Windows XP. My ISP is AOL. I only have the two browsers Firefox and Internet Explorer 8.0 (which won't update).

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

You may have zoomed the page(s) by accident.
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
