Is it possible to Sync to a new computer when Windows Easy File Transfer won't work

When setting up a friend's new computer, Window's Easy File Transfer wouldn't work because his old computer is XP.

What's important to him are his links (bookmarks) and we set up Sync on both computers. It worked great when we got the right bookmarks setup on his old computer (he's got a corrupt file and I couldn't locate the bookmark files on the hard drive), but my question is this:

Will the link to the new computer become permanent if we turn the old computer off or does he have to go to all the links (he's got hundreds) and make new bookmarks on the new (Windows 8) computer?

In other words, are we just accessing the old computer's bookmarks or are they really on the new computer?

Easiest is always to use an USB stick or other removable media to transfer the file to the other computer.

Note that it might be necessary to delete/replace the places.sqlite file if there are problems with the bookmarks.

From another thread by madcat111 [/questions/1016795]

This is to answer cor-el who emailed me and gave me links to transfer the bookmark files from the old computer (XP) to the new computer (Win 8).

The problem is that I can't even get to "trouble shooting" in the Firefox menu. There is some file corrupt before I'm even able to get that far.

We found his old bookmark files on the hard drive, but eventually, on the old computer, the correct bookmarks loaded in Firefox only way deep in the bookmark menu so I had to drag them onto the toolbar individually and finally the new computer synced up with the correct bookmarks.

I would love to find the files for the bookmarks but I've looked and only found the old bookmark files (even looked where it said to look in "help"). In any case, please don't send me another link unless it solves my problem; I've worked on computers since 1984 and I know when the computer freezes up (and it does when I go to "help" and then "trouble shooting"—when I click "trouble shooting" is when everything stops.

Did you find the Firefox profile folder on the computer with XP?

The "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.

You can copy the places.sqlite file to the profile folder on your current computer or restore the most recent JSON backup (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx_$$$$.json) in the bookmarkbackups folder on the XP computer via the Library in the current computer (Show All Bookmarks: Import & Export > Restore).

You can open the Library via the list button with the "Show your bookmarks ()" tooltip that is positioned on the Navigation Toolbar next to the star to bookmark the current tab.

Cor-el, I was unable to find access the profile folder on the XP because Firefox would completely hangup when "help: troubleshooting Information" was clicked (as I said, there's a corrupt file somewhere connected to Firefox).

We could download a new Firefox (uninstall and re-download which I may do when I go back over tomorrow) but the "bottom line" is this:

Is there anyway to make the sync'd bookmarks in Firefox on the new computer PERMANENT other than going to each site (there are hundreds of links) and making them bookmarks anew?

By the way, I've made all the hidden files visible, and the bookmark files are just not where they're supposed to be.

By the way, thanks for all your help. We are continuing to "solidify" the bookmarks that have been accessed from the new machine with Sync (with each link he goes to, he makes it a new bookmark).

But he's having problems with Firefox now (it shouldn't be "timing out" on a machine with as much RAM as he has. So we'll try reinstalling over the current copy and, if that doesn't work, we'll uninstall and try downloading a brand new Firefox (already have the latest, however) Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.'
