I get this error message when hitting send. I dont know what to do. I

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. u5sm5345151wia.17 - gsmtp. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again. 

have tried putting in STARTTLS in the server settings as suggested by someone else but that doesnt work. HELP!
