You can add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line to have a drop marker on the search bar just like you have at the at the right end of the location bar.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

/* searchbar history */
#searchbar .autocomplete-history-dropmarker {
 -moz-binding: url("chrome://global/content/bindings/autocomplete.xml#history-dropmarker");
 display:-moz-box !important;
 -moz-appearance: toolbarbutton-dropdown !important;
}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
  • Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
  • Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) userChrome.css file in the chrome folder (file name is case sensitive)
  • Paste the code in the userChrome.css file in the editor window
  • Make sure that the userChrome.css file starts with the default @namespace line
  • Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as userChrome.css.
    Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userChrome.css.txt file

Hi Cor-el, I have created a 'chrome' folder in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder, but I am unable to proceed. I cannot create the <userChrome.css> file in the <chrome> folder, for some reason. This all seems rather complicated to me! Tell your buddies to include the dropdown in the search bar window. I hope you can help me, Richard.

Create userChrome.css file with a text editor. Do not use a word processor.

Hi finitarry, I was using Notepad and could not get it to work, I must have been doing something dumb I guess. What I am trying to do is put a dropdown on the Search Bar. Can you help, Thanks rmhc.

Can you post the content of the userChrome.css file?

Did you verify that it is a CSS file and not a TEXT file with a hidden .txt file extension?

Hi cor-el, I created the <chrome> folder in <xxxxxxxx default> and the 'userChrome.css' file is in 'chrome' but there is nothing in it. I also installed 'chromEdit Plus' and it also shows 'userChrome.css' to be empty. Stick with me and we will get it! Richard.

If you have ChromEdit Plus, you can paste the content recommended by cor-el into the userChrome.css file with that extension.

Make sure that the userChrome.css file is saved as a plain text file and not formatted like a rich text document.
