More correctly, Firefox still returns 'can't find server' when i attempt a search. Have gone through all of the firewall settings I also restored the system back to before I started experiencing this problem but it didn't help, We are connected to the internet and can connect to the internet via Firefox from a laptop.

Hi Mike,

If you installed Firefox from a CD it is very likely outdated. I would download a copy of the offline installer fresh.

Are you able to access the internet from another browser (Internet Explorer or Chrome)?

I CREATED THE CD YESTERDAY USING THE OFFLINE INSTALLER ON ANOTHER COMPUTER. CHROME DOESN'T WORK EITHER. NONE OF THE THE TROUBLESHOOTER ROUTNES COULD FIND A PROBLEM EITHER. I AM RELUCTANT TO WIPE C DRIVE BECAUSE OF THE THE NUMBER OF PROGRAMS THAT HAVE BEEN DOWNLOADED ONLINE OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. (NOTHING ILLEGAL OR BOOTLEGGED).

It sounds like an internet connectivity issue.

Try this:

  1. click start
  2. type in cmd
  3. push enter
  4. a command prompt window will open
  5. type in "ping google.com" and push enter

It should say Reply from x.x.x.x if it doesn't then you will need to troubleshoot your internet connection.

thanks for your continued help. the ping worked, 4 sends, four receives, no loses. I can print wirelessly and can access the internet via the same wireless router using Firefox on a different PC. I have made sure that the lan card is working and have tested witht he firewall both on and off. Also made sure that FIREFOX was enabled. have also used all of the on-board troubleshooting routines but no problems were detected. I have to believe that some piece of software has been either corrupted or deleted.

If both Firefox and Chrome won't "connect", it isn't a Firefox support issue.

See if either of these help you. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cant-connect-internet#1TC=windows-7 For Vista / WinXP - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-Internet-connection-problems

What address are you trying to connect to?

I already went through everything they recommended and as I mentioned previously I can access the internet with a different computer on my home network. I think I need to restore Windows 7 entirely, since no halfway Microsoft measures have worked. The reason I brought up my problem to the Firefox group is that hoped that someone else had experienced the same problem and was able to resolve it.

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select Network. Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button. Check the settings.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Thanks for your help.I followed every step deleted firefox from the firewall directory, deleted it from the x86 program folder and reinstalled Firefox added it back to the firewall list and made sure that it was allowable but the situation remained the same, I opened the Firefox program folder and noticed that all but four dll modules had today's date in the modified date column, MSVCP100.dll, MSVCR100.dll, D3DCOMPILER43.dll and 46.dll. I don't know what, if any effect that would have on the functionality of Firefox. I am going to do a factory restore on Windows 7 and have already backed up all of my data and other programs onto an external three terrabyte drive. If that doesn't work I am going to have an expensive doorstop

Don't worry about the dates of the files. Those dates are for when the file was created / last altered. Installers use the latest known files in their installing.
