Migrated old profile but forgot to backup existing profile before renaming. Best way to recover emails in original profile which still exists as *.old?

Obviously I left out the backup or export step, not sure which. Anyhow, don't want to make things worse so figured better ask before proceeding. I renamed existing 'new but used' profile to *.old and copied old profile into same folder, giving it name of 'new but used' profile. There are emails in 'new but used' profile that I need to recover. What is best way to proceed?

Thanks, Mike

ok, either copy all mbox files from old to new and place them under local folders. don't copy *.msf-files (they are just indexfiles and will be recreated)

delete panacea.dat It will be recreated. (it contains a listing of directories and folders)

or get an addon ExportImportTools that can help you import a mbox.

When they are in local folders you can move them around.

Further info that may be of no use... I have numerous filters and folders set up in both profiles and they may be slightly different but with same intended end result. Imagine the resolution of these differences will be simply brute force and awkwardness - which is the price I pay for leaving out important steps.

Sorry i don't really get it, did you create a new profile with profilemaker? did you rename the old one with profilemaker?

Can you use thunderbird -P (choose to be offline) to choose profile? Are they different? still offline. Did you overwrite the new profiles data with the old?

Your mails is in MBOXES. That is files without extensions. They are in the profile under IMAPMAIL and MAIL and under their resp accountnames.

But its not a good idea to put those back under IMAP-accounts, . With POP its easier, I still wouldn't overwrite any existing folders

You can copy those into your new profile but put them under Local Folders. Be careful you dont overwrite. rename if you need to. All *.msf can be deleted as well as Panacea.dat. They will all be recreated.

I did a copy and rename of the .default folder. Did not even look inside it. Maybe that is all I need to do...

What do you want to accomplice? Do you have 2 profiles?

Yes, I currently have the profile that was created with the new install of Tbird. It is now *.old instead of *.default. I salvaged my old profile from a backup, copied it into the profiles folder and gave it the name of the newly created (but with some emails in it) new profile. I want to merge the emails from these two profiles. The rest of the mess with different named folders I will deal with manually and the same with any filters.

Thanks, Mike

there are also *.sbd directories, they can be moved as well, but then also copy the empty associated "mbox" (like arcive.sbd and arcive)
