How I know that? I'm gonna tell you how. So i'm using Windows XP and have the Network icon always sitting in the Tray, so I can always see when my Computer accessing the internet. And I noticed when all my internet applications where closed the Network icon was still showing the Traffic activity. So I checked the Task Manager for unknown running processes and didn't find any. Then I checked Kaspersky Internet Security's Network Monitoring where I found out that there's only one application is currently accessing the internet - the Firefox. It downloads/uploads something at very slow speeds like 1-10 KB/s. In this Internet Monitoring feature you can see which IP adress it currnetly accessing. And there's a lot of them. I have the Firefox v36.0.1. Can you tell me why is this happening?

In the attached image you can see that Kaspersky shows that Firefox is currently using internet traffic (49 connected IPs!) while Windows Task Manager shows that Firefox is not running (the list of processes is sorted by name).
