"Firefox is up to date" is incorrect.
I use automatic update. My company requires us to update to current version and alerts us when a new version is available. When I open Firefox, it does not say a new version is available, and when I follow the "about firefox" path, Firefox just tells me that the old version is current. This is not true.
If there is a problem with the automatic update server, the message should state that. It should not tell user that their version is current when it does not have the data needed to make that statement.
This is a long standing problem.

It is true that Firefox 37.0 has been released, but updates have been disabled to allow investigating and fixing some reported startup crashes on Windows (bug 1149761 and bug 1149864). There will be a Firefox 37.0.1 version released to address these crashes. You can download and install the full version if you want to install Firefox 37.0 at this moment.

Sorry that you're having this issue. If you want, you can always manually update by downloading the Firefox setup file from Firefox.com, running it, then installing Firefox like you normally would using the installer. Firefox.com should also show you if your Firefox version is current.

Firefox updates even by way of manual checks are disabled due to a problem crash on Windows. There is going to be a 37.0.1.

You can download Firefox 37.0 from www.mozilla.org/firefox/all however since you use Windows it may be best to wait for Fx 37.0.1
