I explained what the 36.0, 36.0.1, v36.0.3 and v36.0.4 are at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1055806

The first version is the Major Release version. The last number like say 36..4.0 was a chemspill update to do stability and or security fixes. These minor versions are not Releases. Ideally there is no minor updates.

As you can see with previous Firefox Releases like 30.0, 26.0, 22.0, 21.0 for example on https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/releases/ there were no updates for them as there was nothing that warranted a stability and or security fix before next Release at time.

Release/beta/Aurora/nightly/ESR are the main channels.

Current as of this post: Release channel currently has 37.0.1 as you can see at www.mozilla.org/firefox/all Beta = 38.0b# and currently has 38.0b1 Aurora = 39.0a1 Nightly = 40.0a1

The Beta channel can have say six to twelve builds for a version.

Aurora is now called Developers Edition and both Aurora/Nightly gets checkins almost everyday so they get a update each of those days. Due to checkins they can be unstable at times until problem checkin(s) is fixed or backed out next update. These two channels are more for Testers and Devs and those who at least know how to manage separate folder installs and Profiles for each as they are not meant for regular Firefox users.

ESR is short for Extended Support Release and is currently based on Firefox 31.0 and the current Release version is 31.6.0esr. The second number like say the 6 in 31.6.0 esr goes up one version (next will be 36.7.0 esr) in line with the next Firefox Release (which will be 38.0) and the last number goes up if a chemspill update is warranted.

When Firefox 38.0 is Released the next ESR will be based on it.
