I got a color wheel when I was in Firefox, so I force quit and could not restart Firefox. So, I downloaded another Firefox, which would not install.

When I was in Firefox, I got a color wheel, and it froze, so I force quit. Then I could not restart Firefox from Finder application. So, I downloaded another Firefox (Firefox 42.0 dmg), and clicked on it and nothing happened. I moved this dmg to the Finder app, and I got an error message, stating that "error occurred" and could not install.

Did you try to drag a possible existing Firefox application to the trash?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
