I downloaded a link that centurylink offered to make my upgrade to windows 10 go smoothly. After that download is when the extra centurylink tab appeared. It is not listed as my homepage and I deleted the download but I still get the tab every time I open Firefox and I want to get rid of it.

If the page does not appear when you call up a new window (Ctrl+n) or click the Home button, it could be embedded in the shortcut you use to start Firefox. You can check for a modified desktop/taskbar shortcut as follows:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

The Target line should not have anything after this part:

  • 64-bit Windows, standard 32-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • 64-bit Windows, test 64-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • 32-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If any URLs are listed after that, clear them out and save your change. To test, you can either:

  • Desktop shortcut: double-click the icon to launch a new window
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, click Mozilla Firefox to launch a new window

If you only get your home page, it worked.

Was that it?

The centurylink address was in the target line as you said. But I fixed it differently.... I actually just unpinned the icon from the task bar, found the firefox icon in the apps list and repinned it to the task bar and that automatically changed the target address back to what it should be. No more centurylink tab! Thank you, I hope this helps others.
