New Thunderbird version installed, I don't recall giving permission to update. Copying and pasting from existing Thunderbird message into a new one doesn't work properly: formatting & links disappear. Also, there is no visible option to toggle between HTML and plain text. Using Windows 8. I am irritated by "Upgrades" that function worse than my existing application.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

I don't have add-ons, but I tried this anyway. I discovered that the problem is something different. I can copy links from within the same Thunderbird message and paste them unaffected.

But when I copy from my Firefox browser the formatting and links disappear. My Firefox may have been recently updated, again without my giving permission.

Also, what happened to the ability to toggle between formatted and unformatted text when typing a message?

You are using windows, so you have internet explorer installed. So can you copy those links from the same page using Internet explorer?

How did you do it in the past. I though it was something that you have to select when opening the window by holding the shift key to force either text or HTML depending on your set default.
