Hi all,

I've got a computer system for patron use here at our library that, for various reasons, I am currently unable to update beyond Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. A recent update to Outlook/Hotmail means that Chrome and Firefox won't display the inbox correctly on either browser, so a slightly newer version of Firefox should hopefully help!

I was curious what the latest version of Firefox this system would support would be, and if anybody knows where I could get an installer for such an older Firefox version...?

Cheers and thanks!

Ubuntu 10.10 is rather old and was not a LTS version. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntu

Firefox as of Firefox 46.0 and newer requires GTK3 with 3.4 being the minimum even though it is pretty old. As a result GTK3 themes needs to be used on OS for Firefox to be themed. While current Firefox can work if a GTK2 theme is being used for OS, it can look unthemed and have some issues like the scroll bar arrows being missing for example.

It is possible for get Firefox 46.0 and newer running on say Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS with the GTK3 update which is only 3.4 if I recall but meets the minimum.

The newest supported Firefox Releases you may be able to get up and running as requirements were much the same for a long time (up till Firefox 46.0 was released) is the Firefox 45.0 ESR. https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ The ESR branch of Releases is normally for enterprise users in mind but still safe to use to get most security updates.

The tar.bz2 is basically a archive as there is not installers or rpm or deb files for Linux versions of Firefox from mozilla.org. The basics is you just extract the tarbal and run the firefox script in Firefox folder to run Firefox. Make sure the folder has read/write permissions so it can update.
