Where did the eBay search engine go?

Firefox 49.0.1 - the eBay search engine disappeared. I've had it installed for a LONG time and now it's gone.

Where did it go?

How do I get it back?

It appears that the eBay search engine was removed from Firefox 49. I have it in Firefox 48 and earlier, but not in Firefox 49.

Also - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-search-bar-firefox#firefox:win7:fx49 - the image that appears when Firefox 49 is selected under Editing Tools doesn't have eBay showing; where Firefox 48 and earlier do show it.

If you want that search engine install it from here: http://mycroftproject.com/ebay-search-plugins.html

Yeah, I checked my laptop with FF ver. 48 last night and it's still there.

The button for restoring the defaults is grayed out (for me) in ver. 49, so that didn't help.

Hopefully it'll be back in ver. 50.

Really you expect somebody to be fired over a simple search engine which can be easily added.

One other option, if you normally like to search from the address bar instead of the search bar:

On the eBay home page, right-click on the search form and choose "Add a keyword for this search". For example, you could type eb for eBay. (This is creating a bookmark, so there's a bar to place it somewhere other than the Bookmarks Menu if you want to change to a folder, for example.)

Then after you save that, you can search eBay using the address bar as follows:

eb ipad pro

I found the XML file for the old eBay search plugin:

https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-release/raw-file/31ca1b4c28a9f64e49d59ed01d08469a9af41951/browser/locales/en-US/searchplugins/eBay.xml

However, Firefox doesn't automatically detect that as an OpenSearch plugin so you can add it to the search bar. To do that, you can inject a link tag into this page as follows:

(1) Select and copy the following script (it's all one long line):

var el = document.createElement("link"); el.setAttribute("rel", "search"); el.setAttribute("type", "application/opensearchdescription+xml"); el.setAttribute("title", "eBay"); el.setAttribute("href", "https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-release/raw-file/31ca1b4c28a9f64e49d59ed01d08469a9af41951/browser/locales/en-US/searchplugins/eBay.xml"); document.body.appendChild(el);

(2) Open the Web Console in the lower part of the tab using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+k
  • "3-bar" menu button > Developer > Web Console

(3) Click in the blank line at the bottom (to the right of the >> symbol) and paste the script

(4) Press Enter to run the script -- the console should display a colorfully formatted link tag similar to:

<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" title="eBay" href="https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-release/raw-file/31ca1b4c28a9f64e49d59ed01d08469a9af41951/browser/locales/en-US/searchplugins/eBay.xml">

(5) Click the search bar magnifying glass icon, and a new row should have appeared on the drop-down to Add "eBay". Click that and eBay should be added.

Success? You can close the Web Console now.
