There is a MaAfee icon on my address bar that I need to remove. Can't find a way to remove it. It is between the drop-down menu (New Window, Print, Find, History, etc.) and small arrow on the edge of the screen (options, site report). Using "customize" doesn't work. How do I remove the icon or move it to another bar?

A McAfee technician solved the problem of removing their icon. The problem is not with McAfee; it's with Firefox. The easiest way to manage is to use a different browser. If you use Chrome to get to the website where the McAfee icon is a problem, you can remove the icon without disabling the security software. I don't like having to use a different browser just for Facebook, but it works fine. I'll also use Firefox for everything else. Thanks for making suggestions. Linda

Please see Disable or remove Add-ons and see if helps.

Kindly let us know if this solves your question.

The System Details list next to the question shows that you have the "McAfee WebAdvisor 5.0.218.0" extension and the "McAfee MSC FF plugin DLL" plugin. The McAfee extension is likely installed globally. You can disable a plugin (never activate) via "Add-ons -> Plugins" (Tools menu or "3-bar" menu button).

Extensions that do not have a "Remove" button are installed globally by other software and are not under control of the Firefox extension manager. Globally installed extensions are usually found via a registry scan or are installed in a location that Firefox scans for installed extensions.

Extensions installed this way need to be removed via the settings (options/preferences) of the program that has added this extension or this program has to be uninstalled via "Control Panel > Programs". In Firefox you can only disable such an extension.

You can possibly check the install location in the extensions.json file. You can open the extensions.json file in the Scratchpad and search for this extension. The descriptor field should list its install location.

First, thanks for a lot of info, but I'm not a techi. I don't want to disable or remove the program; just move the icon. What is a "json" file? Where to do get to the scratch pad? If I find the file that's related to the icon, will knowing its install location help me to move the icon?

If you have a icon that is added by your McAfee security software then you either need to disable the extension that provides this icon in Firefox or check the Windows Control Panel for the program that adds this feature to Firefox and see if you can disable this in the McAfee program. Security software can be stubborn though and disabling the extension in Firefox might not be possible and you may have to uninstall that McAfee component via the Windows Control Panel or contact McAfee for support.

.json is a file extension similar to .exe for executable files and .html for internet files and .jpg for images. In this case extensions.json is the file in the Firefox profile folder that stores all information about installed extensions.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

The Scratchpad is one of Firefox's built-in developer tools that you can find in the Developer sub menu ("3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list).
