I have been suffering unresponsive script and have followed all the previous advice. I have installed the yesscript add on but it is not helping. I have added google. gmail etc yet i am still getting the errors. i am having to force quit on a regular basis. getting close to giving up on fire fox as i spend more time restarting and restoring and adding addresses to yesscript than actually browsing.

Sorry to hear about this problem. You probably have seen this article already: Warning Unresponsive script - What it means and how to fix it.

It's often hard to read, but what kinds of addresses does the dialog usually list? For example:

  • addresses starting with the name of the site usually are features/functions of the page
  • addresses from other sites often (but not always) are advertising networks - using an ad blocking or anti-tracking extension can help address issues with slow or dysfunctional ad network/tracking scripts
  • addresses starting with chrome:// usually are part of Firefox or of an extension you installed - the Skype extension sometimes causes this problem, for example

I have followed that article.

Yes it is often chrome// Google// Facebook//

I have tried an ad blocker

Okay, if you see a chrome:// URL can you try grabbing a screenshot of it so we can learn more about what it might be pointing to?

You should never see addresses starting with Google// or Facebook//, please look at those more carefully the next time you see them and make a note of the full host name.

For reference: https://hostname/folder/page.html

The google ones are Apis, Ajax, gmail or hangouts.google.com Will try and take screen shots but as it usually hangs the whole machine I think it is unlikely.

Thank you

If you click Continue once does that help at all? I don't know why those would be so slow on your system, but I'm a Windows guy.

Thanks, I don't know what that script is for, but it's huge and (typical for Google) very hard to read:

https://mail.google.com/_/scs/mail-static/_/js/k=gmail.main.en.7BEiIyElYTQ.O/m=pds,pdit,m_i,pdt,t/am=VsBpEPn9BBzMAGPpCAgz_-cvJ4eHPb_9_z-APCrgG_Bv7v8J_AYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAC2KD4B/rt=h/d=1/rs=AHGWq9BZTu9A8q-LJx0_8Jx7T_cJX8xydQ

Other scripts with /scs/ in the path seem related to chat or social communication features. I can't think of a specific reason for those functions to be stalling or failing to run as quickly as they should.

One way to try to diagnose whether a setting could be the problem is to create a new profile. This is just for testing unless you discover that you like getting a fresh start.

New Profile Test

This takes about 5 minutes, plus the time to test Gmail.

First, let's back up your bookmarks for easy importing into the new profile, in case you need them. You can use the steps in this article, and please save it to a convenient location like your Desktop or a documents folder: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

Next, inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the Create a New Profile button, then click Next. Assign a name like July2017, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button. (There are some other buttons, but I think those are still "under construction" so please ignore them.)

Firefox should exit and then start up using the new profile, which will just look brand new.

If you want to use your bookmarks in the new profile, you can restore the backup you created earlier using the steps in that same article.

Do your familiar problem sites work any better in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, open the about:profiles page again, click the Set as default profile button for your normal profile, then click the Restart normally button to get back to it.

Is Mozilla aware that they screwed something up with the recent update where now everyone's getting a message indicating that a web page is slowing down the browser and it's just the new alert for unresponsive scripts? Is there a fix in the works? I'm currently no longer using Firefox due to its instability but I check in every so often to see if it's back up and working properly again to no avail.
