Firefox no longer supports LastPass

Before continuing, note well: LastPass continues to work properly in, e.g.: Brave, Chrome, IE, Opera, etc. The problem is with Firefox, not with LastPass. If LastPass works properly with other browsers commonly in use, and fails to work with Firefox, identifying the source of the problem is obvious. (hint: It's not LastPass.)

Onward.

I had been successfully using LastPass (v 4.1.62) with Firefox (v 54.0.1). I updated Firefox to v 55.0.2. LastPass failed to work properly, so I attempted to revert to Firefox v 54.0.1. LastPass's functionality has been lost. The problem is with Firefox, not with LastPass.

I see some active threads on the LastPass forums (about 11 pages of posts), but there is not a clear solution yet:

Most users who uninstalled the last stable release of the LastPass extension and installed the beta release reported that it helped them. See: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/lastpass-password-manager/versions/beta

One tester reported the beta still has some issues on their Firefox:

  • If you select "Show matching sites in top level menu", then go to one of those menu choices on a given site and select "options', it takes you to a little dropdown toolbar menu that says "back" but nothing else, and from that point the Lastpass toolbar menu is no longer accessible. The browser must be restarted to return Lastpass back to a fully functioning state.
  • If you deselect "Show matching sites in top level menu", then go to one of those choices on a given site and select "options', the first time you try it, nothing happens and the Lastpass toolbar menu is exited. You must repeat the process to get to the options menu.
  • I tried to export a Lastpass .csv file. That does not work.

Quick summary: no joy.

Emphasizing: none of these problems occur with other popular browsers, e.g.: Brave, Chrome, IE, Opera. The problem clearly isn't LastPass; it's Firefox.

I tried the drastic alternative of resetting Firefox to its default settings and then reloading LastPass and my other add-ins. Summarizing: no change. LastPass (within Firefox) won't retain preferences or its login status.

Worth adding: LastPass offers a "de-bug" url:

It displays session ID's that change from browser session to browser session when I log out of LastPass, and, without closing Firefox, log in again. Slightly down the page, 3rd-party cookie check is okay.

Again, no other popular browser demands jumping through these hoops. They just work. Firefox fails.

If LastPass needs something to change in Firefox to resolve the problems with their add-on, I'm sure they will raise those issues with the developers by filing a bug report. Otherwise, they presumably will resolve it on their own. Until then, it sounds as though you need to log in again every time you exit out of Firefox and start it up again. It would make sense to minimize the number of times that happens until an update is available.

Apart from that comment, the response from Firefox has been like the obliviously proud parent watching the band march by: "Everyone's out of step except Johnny."

Obviously you value LastPass just as many other add-on users value the add-ons they depend on, and changes in Firefox can be painful when add-on developers do not keep up with changes in Firefox, causing some breakage in their extensions. Sometimes add-on developers get surprised by a new Firefox release, but more often they hear from users of beta versions of Firefox about upcoming changes and have sufficient time to adapt or request necessary changes. It's hard to know what happened in this case. LastPass is in the best position to say and while they released the beta version I linked to, I have not seen any statements about the problem.

In that paragraph, you can replace LastPass with the names of dozens of other add-ons that were broken by updates over the years, and, I'm sure, will be broken in the future.
