I use the drag and drop method of bookmarking, dragging the circled "i" down to the folder and/or subfolder of choice on the Bookmark Toolbar. However no icons are showing up where I have placed that bookmark, not even after I return to that bookmark and click on it to reload that page (which used to work). I also have tried bookmarking by dragging the icon in the tab to where I want the bookmark to be, but that doesn't work either. Sort of related to this is not icons showing up if I do a manual export of the bookmarks to another computer, but I don't know if it is really related to my original question.

Favicon storage for bookmarks was changed for Firefox 55. And is seems that now the Favicons are being stored when using {Ctrl + D} to save a new bookmark; although I rarely use that method to save a new bookmark, the "drag'n'drop" method is what I have been using for years now - to get the Favicon saved with the new bookmark.

Dragging the circled "I" seems to work fine for me with Firefox 55.0.2; along with dragging the Tab to save a new bookmark to the Bookmarks Toolbar.

As far as Favicons being included with an Export to HTML format, that has always been a part of Firefox since like Firefox 0.8. But doing a "backup" to JSON format of copying over a Bookmarks Backup file has never included the Favicons.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see if "drag'n'drop" works.
