When I run sync, it transfers the top level bookmark folders between laptops, but it does not sync the sub-folders into which I have my bookmarks synced. How do I manage to sync my carefully filed bookmarks from one Windows laptop to another (my personal laptop to my work laptop)?

I sympathize with you! I have thousands of bookmarks, some going back to the last century (although I do rationalize them sometimes are re-sort them all. I have had lots of sync issues in the past, so think I might be able to help, with the story of my recent experience.

Although I am now retired, I do use lots of devices and syncing bookmarks between them all (various PCs, Macs, phones, iPad, etc). is really important to me. To make matters worse, I regularly use a variety of different web browsers on each device (e.g. Firefox, Chrome, Waterfox, Safari at the moment).

Right now, I have 5 different devices running the latest Firefox (v57.0 on the PCs) and my sync is now working perfectly, after some initial problems. Because I was overdue doing a bookmark sort out, what I did was disconnect the Firefox sync on one of my machines, sort out the bookmarks (I will not go into how here, but I did back them up to both an HTML file and .json file from the "Show All Bookmarks" library window).

Because I know that I still had lots of old bookmarks in a bad organization on the other machines, I did not want my carefully crafted new bookmark folder structure to be messed up, so I used a different email address for Firefox sync that I had not used before.

All was initially fine, but then I stuffed up and changed the sync to that new address on a different PC, without getting rid of the old bookmark structure in that Firefox first... grrr. That left me in a right mess on both machines.

Well taking heart in my hands, I disconnected both those machines from that email sync and deleted the Firefox Sync account completely, deleted all the messed up bookmark structure on the machine that I had re-organized them on and re-imported my nice clean structure.

I then re-created my Firefox Sync account again, using the same new email address that I had previously. I decided to uninstall and re-install a clean version of Firefox on all my other devices, just to make certain that as well as getting rid of the old messed up bookmark structures, the other stuff like passwords would all be re-synced. It also gave time for the first machine to upload all the stuff to sync anyway.

Well, now everything is working perfectly. I have a laptop right next to the desktop I am typing this on and if I change a bookmark file or folder, even nested about 5 layers down on my structure and go to the other machine and select Tools -> Synchronise Now (I have the menu bar displayed), the changes are instantly there.

Hope that might help? If not, let me know and if nobody else gives you a quick fix beforehand I might be able to give some other advice.
