Firefox (and only Firefox) loses connection to the internet after a period of time.

As of recently, my Firefox will simply not load any webpages after a period of time where it'll function correctly. I'll click on a link, it'll try to connect, but instead of any progress dialogue on the bottom left corner of the screen (Connecting, Waiting for..., etc) there's simply nothing. It just hangs. It's clearly a lack of internet connection, however, as I see that websites such as Twitter no longer pick up on new posts, and my Gmail reports that it's been disconnected.

This has occurred multiple times over the past few months, but seems to resolves itself within a few minutes to a few hours. As of last week, however, it has gotten to the point where Firefox will open, connect to the internet, and then within a few minutes no longer connect to the internet until the few moments after I restart the browser. All other programs and browsers do connect to the internet.

I've scanned for malware and come up clean with both MSE and Malwarebytes. I've set my connection settings to "No Proxy," and I've cleared my cache and cookies multiple times to no avail. Is there anything else I could do to fix this? Would a full wipe be the best option?

go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check (put a tick in the box) the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser.

I have done so, and unfortunately the problem persists. On the bright side, it seems to have stabilized into a pattern: As of today, when I open Firefox, I have at most a minute or a half of internet connection in the browser (just enough time to see my e-mail or notifications on Twitter, etc) and then the problem returns, instead of only a few minutes. Preventing Accessibility Services was not the cause of this new change, I am sure, it happened on the session where I changed the setting as requested.

SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST is the problem still there .....if is then is your Profile that is the issue.

There is security software like Avast, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate which goes to fault or error. Please check your Software and or go to the above sites forums if running any of the above.

My sincerest apologies for the slow response. I prepared to test my browser for safe mode on Tuesday when I found that the problem no longer occurred. I was sure that it would happen again, so I waited until it did so, and it was only until today did the problem resurface. Until now, my browsing worked normally. I had been using the browser for five hours when the problem returned.

The browser had no problem connecting to websites in Safe Mode. I kept the browser open for a half hour, so while I cannot say the problem doesn't resurface in Safe Mode for sure, it is safe to assume that, because I started the program in Safe Mode immediately after the problem occurred and I connected normally, that it does not happen there.

Oddly enough, I restarted my browser regularly to compare and contrast, and the browser now connects normally. Restarting the browser usually does not solve the problem on its own, so this is very confusing to me. I also don't know how long it'll last.

The only add-ons I have on my Firefox are NoScript and uBlock Origin. I only use the default theme. To answer your other suggestion, I do not use Avast, Kaspersky, BitDefender, or ESET, and do not have any other security software that could intercept secure connections that I am aware of.

Yes, don't ya just love it........ Well can test if want to : Create a new profile as a TEST to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem. Never work with original files.
