I just updated firefox and was bookmarking a page but when I opened the bookmarks menu to check that it was there and delete the old version of the page the new bookmark was not present. On closer inspection I noticed it saved it to "other bookmarks" instead. How do I change the default save location back to the bookmark menu because as often as I update my bookmarks with newer pages having to manually select the bookmark menu is gonna get old really fast.

I think Firefox 4 added the star icon inside the address bar to "quick bookmark" a page to the "Unsorted Bookmarks" category. That was later renamed to "Other Bookmarks" and the star button has always worked that way ever since.

It was never consistent to have the other methods of adding a bookmark (Ctrl+d, right-click the page, Bookmarks menu) add it to the end of the Bookmarks Menu, so they made them consistent. I'm just surprised they didn't change the star icon to work like the other methods!

Workaround

The following extension lets you choose your preferred folder so now you can use any method and end up with what you want.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-bookmark-folder/

To select your preferred folder after installation:

Open the Add-ons page using any of these:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then on the right side click the Options button (on Mac, Preferences) for the extension. The setting you want to update is pictured in the attached screenshot.

Success?

Hi bertbowe, I don't understand your comment. Could you walk me through it:

Did you first install the Default Bookmark Folder extension from the Mozilla Add-ons site (link), and that seemed to go normally?

Then you opened the Add-ons page and clicked Extensions, but there are no extensions listed there, even though you just installed one?

In that case, could you cross-check the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Scroll down past "Application Basics" and "Firefox Features" to "Extensions". Is the new extension listed there? (This doesn't let you change anything, but could help figure out what's going wrong.)

Many thanks! The bookmark location default worked once I did what was suggested here and then completed the steps: "Did you first install the Default Bookmark Folder extension from the Mozilla Add-ons site (link), and that seemed to go normally?"
