Since installing Quantum, every time I open it I am treated to a large notification bar saying it is critical that I update again. In options "Never check for updates" is clearly checked, but the browser is pinging firefox update anyway every time when I haven't authorized that. This makes me wonder what other background processes are connecting with firefox that ignore security settings. Can anyone explain why these update settings are not working?

Hi, you do miss out on Security Updates like 57.0.4 brings Security fixes to address the Meltdown and Spectre timing attacks as per : https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3023893/opera-mozilla-vivaldi-and-more-rush-to-patch-spectre-and-meltdown-security-holes

Should read what other releases do : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/57.0.4/releasenotes/ Not updating is like running old versions of Flash each version behind brings 100 vulnerabilities and easier to hack

I gather since on version 8.1 of Windows have not paid attention to Windows 10 as a Service Model.

Thanks. I will apply the needed updates but was just wondering why the ‘never check update’ setting is there if it is ignored.

I would think that is the way things are going like Windows 10 as a Service. Also to possibly weed out out dated systems like Vista and XP support Expires next month. Does not stop me from seeing requests for help with versions in the 30's and 40's which I can not remember even using now and I used Netscape which predates those big time.

Too many people I think trying to pump the last gasp of ram out.

Forgot, your Welcome as that update is sorta important. You should check your Motherboard supplier and Chip maker and anything else for their Bios update or Flash. Be aware will loose 5-8% of processing of the chip.

BOTTOM LINE: Firefox now FORCES you to update, regardless of any NEW issues that may lurk in the update itself.

Even Microsoft is not that dictatorial; neither is Google. Both those organizations have QA teams to avoid shipping new DEFECTS.

Any notion that -you- might actually OWN your computer, and want to control what software (and new bugs) get installed on it, is apparently anathema to Mozilla.

NOT using old versions; my Firefox is 62.0.3 and I still cannot get the rational behavior I expect: Words Have Meaning and the code behavior MUST match - or it's a serious DEFECT in the product.

This, folks, is how bugs REPRODUCE... virally... in supposedly-"new" releases.

"Never check for updates" DOES NOT WORK as the English words specify it should. Change the words, or the code, so they match each other. End of story.
