the wrong email is displayed in the preview pane and when I open the email into its own tab. the sender and subject are different to one shown.

There is no message preview in Thunderbird. The pane is called message pane. When you see a message in the message pane, it isn't previewed. The message has then been opened.
Try to rebuild the index file of the troubled folder. Right-click the folder - Properties - Repair Folder
